ᒪᓂᒎᐢ manicôs. ᒪᓂᒎᐢ manicôs imagines a glitchy Mycobacterium Tuberculosis cell lodged in the lungs of our Indigenous kin. The buggy visual artifacts here open onto a transcendent space, gesturing to the emergence of something new that nonetheless draws from ancestral power. Fireweed sprouts first after fires; here, it overruns the bacterium, blazing a path for Indigenous futures in health/care.

This artwork was created by Cree scholar, artist, and board certified medical illustrator, SJ Okemow. The image, a conceptual collaboration and fusion of art, science, and critical Indigenous theory, accompanied Ending Violence Against Indigenous Peoples in Canada: A Healthcare Responsibility in The Lancet Regional Health - Americas on October 4, 2024. October 4th is the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, & Gender Diverse People.
